  1. Apparatus for rotating containers at high
  2. speeds. One use is for separating mixtures of
  3. substances of different densities. The
  4. mixtures are placed in the containers and the
  5. rotation sets up centrifugal forces, causing
  6. them to separate according to their
  7. densities. A common example is the separation
  8. of the lighter cream from the heavier milk in
  9. this way. The ultracentrifuge is a very
  10. high-speed centrifuge, used for separating
  11. colloids, and in biochemistry, and may
  12. operate at several million revolutions per
  13. minute. Large centrifuges are used for
  14. physiological research, for example, in
  15. astronaut training where bodily response is
  16. tested to many times the normal gravitational
  17. force.
